Cherokee Wood Carver

David Williams painted this piece to honor Williard Stone, a Cherokee artist best known for his wood sculptures carved in a flowing Art Deco style. Williams, whose native name was Tos-que, studied art at the Indian Art Center in Fort Sill, Oklahoma and later at Bacone College. He had numerous exhibitions at museums throughout the United States, including the Laguna Gloria Art Museum in Austin, Texas. Williams’ work is part of the permanent collections of many museums, including the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
