America Meredith’s portrait of Minnehaha Josephine Watie, a Cherokee woman born in 1853 in Indian Territory, was created using four stencils and free form use of smoke. Josephine’s father was Stand Watie, the famous Cherokee Confederate general. America is a Swedish-Cherokee painter, printmaker, educator, and editor of First American Art Magazine. She often combines Native American and pop imagery in her work. America has art degrees from the San Francisco Art Institute, the University of Oklahoma, and the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
