Mars Biggoose (1943-2000)

Marcellus “Mars” Biggoose (1943-2000) was a member of the Ponca Tribe. He graduated from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1963. Mars designed the Great Ponca Seal of Oklahoma. His work is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. The Native American Church greatly influenced Biggoose’s work and his work often depicts its spiritual aspect. Biggoose’s work has been described as poetic in color and form-free flowing spiritual art.
