Justus Benally
Justus Benally is from the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona. Benally is a multidisciplinary artist who engages in experimental sound installation,photographic printmaking, aerosol painting, visual illustration,film, and sustainable permaculture. He earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree in Studio Arts in 2017 from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Benally draws inspiration for his work from the desert landscape where he grew up, Apache ceremonies, Apache singing, primitive angled geometric forms, and language.

Justus is from the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona. I purchased this piece from Justus when he was a student at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. The Wino Trail was part of his senior thesis. Justus states that his thesis is "based on the articles of misconception defined by the anthropologists and academics who attempt to explain Apache culture, accurate history, and life-ways." The subject of the painting is based on a photograph of Apache scouts....
