Untitled (The Wino Trail)

Justus was from the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona. I purchased this piece from Justus when he was a student at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. The Wino Trail was part of his senior thesis. Justus stated that his thesis was “based on the articles of misconception defined by the anthropologists and academics who attempt to explain Apache culture, accurate history, and life-ways.” The subject of the painting is based on a photograph of Apache scouts.
