April Holder

April Holder is a Sac and Fox artist who lives in Shawnee, Oklahoma. She learned an appreciation for art from her artistic family. Holder earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Art degree from the Institute of American Indian Arts in 2008. She has exhibited her work in many distinguished art venues throughout the United States. “My work as an artist and as an Indigenous Woman is about creating space for Native visibility and awareness of many Native issues. My art is about changing the narrative of how Indigenous women are exploited and dehumanized, and to show that we are human beings that have many dimensions to our identities. My work is my unique lense of the world, it is self-reflection and appreciation of the beautiful individuals that have shaped my life. I seek to create safe spaces for Indigenous Women, Girls, Trans, and Two Spirit kin to be fearlessly and unapologetically who they are with loving support.”

Mother and Child Reunion

April Holder created this piece to honor her grandmother. "This piece is about my grandmother, and when she passed away. The images are of my grandmother and her mother from when she was a child. It is the reconnection of the bond between a mother and a child after being separated by death. The landscape surrounding them is everywhere my grandmother loved - the mountains of the southwest, the oceans, and the lush floral beauty of Oklahoma. They are immersed in all of the things she loved, once again, forever." April lives in Oklahoma. She is a graduate of the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
