Choctaw artist Waylon Gary White Deer is known for his realistic depictions of Southeastern cultural practices. White Deer lives in Ireland and has said that Irish culture influences the way he thinks about his Choctaw identity: “Among other things my paintings try and show how alive with spirit our tribal ways are, and to help move them forward into other generations.” White Deer has had solo painting exhibitions in both Oklahoma and New York City. He has lectured at numerous venues, including Vanderbilt University and Arizona State University. White Deer graduated from Haskell Indian Nations University and has taught Choctaw Studies at Bacone College.
