Robert Redbird Sr. (1939-2016)

Kiowa artist Robert Redbird, Sr. (1939-2016) was an urban Indian, raised in Dallas, Texas. He was inspired to paint by his grandfather Monroe Tsatoke, one of the internationally renowned Kiowa Five artists. Redbird used stories told by his grandfather and the Kiowa tribal elders to preserve and communicate the Kiowa culture and way of life in his paintings. He is particularly well known for his robed figures. Oklahoma governor Brad Henry declared June 7, 2003 “Robert Redbird Day”, to celebrate Redbird’s accomplishments. Redbird’s art can be found in the permanent collections of the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Denver Art Museum, among others.
