Margaret Wakefield

I am Margaret Littlejohn Wakefield, a watercolor artist and an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. I sign my work as TsaniUsdi, which is Cherokee for Little John, Usdi (little) and Tsani (John). My artwork centers around animals, particularly horses and wildlife, reflecting my natural affinity for these subjects. I am captivated by movement because it epitomizes life; in nature, nothing is ever truly stationary. My creative process is intuitive, with ideas that nearly always include animals. The scenes I select are often filled with movement, capturing a fleeting moment in life. Even when depicting a still moment, I try to convey the inherent dynamism of that scene. I draw my inspiration from life itself. I believe all life is sacred and I strive to encapsulate this in my work. We are all connected, we all come from the stars, and this connection is something I hope to remind viewers of through my art. One unique aspect of my art is how I outline my subjects with a “spirit color”. I allow each subject’s color to reveal itself to me, adding an element of spontaneity and spirituality to my work. Through my paintings I aim to celebrate life and our deep connection to the natural world, inviting viewers to rediscover the beauty and sacredness of all living things.
