Lee Joshua (1937-2001) was a Creek Seminole painter and printmaker who was born in Oklahoma. He received an Indian school education. Joshua’s cousin was the renowned painter Jerome Tiger. When Tiger died in 1967, his mother wanted someone in the family to continue the work that Tiger had started, recording the Creek Seminole culture. Joshua was inspired by this request to become serious about his art. Joshua’s work won awards at many shows, including the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair and Market. His work was exhibited at the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, Oklahoma and the Trail of Tears Art Show at Oklahoma’s Cherokee National Museum, among others.
