Johnnie Diacon is an enrolled citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Oklahoma and a member of the Deer Clan. He attended Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma, where he studied the traditional, flat style of painting under master artist Ruthe Blalock Jones. Diacon also studied the contemporary style of Indian art at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Diacon’s early fascination with Art Nouveau led to an interest in pop art. Diacon has combined Art Nouveau and 1960’s concert posters with Native American traditions and motifs. “My art is geared toward the Muscogee people,” Diacon says. “It’s important to me to tell our stories in an accurate and authentic way. It’s really important that people see our images.” Diacon lives on the Muscogee Creek Nation Reservation in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Philbrook Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Bacone College, among others.
