Hoka Skenandore

Hoka Skenandore

Hoka Skenadore (Oneida/Oglala Lakota/Luiseno) is from Santa Fe, New Mexico. He earned his BFA from the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) and his MFA from the University of Oklahoma. His interest in punk rock, hip-hop culture, graffiti art, and graphics inform his artistic approach. Through his art, Skenandore said his aim is to “bridge the gaps between the gallery, the gutter and everything in between.”

Hoka Skenandore lives in Oklahoma. He spent much of his youth tagging buildings and other inanimate objects as a graffiti artist. Hoka is the third generation of a family of American Indian artists to graduate from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His work has been included in solo and group exhibitions in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arizona, California, South Dakota, and Colorado. Hoka's paintings are also part of the permanent collection of the Heritage Center at the Red Cloud School in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. Hoka painted You Are Here in response to a request for a landscape painting....

Ego Trippin’, Letter H

Hoka Skenandore freely admits this piece is about his ego. You can see his face behind the brightly colored abstractions. Hoka painted a separate piece for each letter of his first name.
