Hadiibah John

Navajo artist Hadiibah John, whose name means “the one that got away in the war” has created a unique style of painting that combines traditional Navajo characters with Japanese anime. Many of John’s characters are strong Navajo women who have traits that are often identified with men, such as warrior and hunter. When John was painting anime characters, her father David John, a well-known painter and sculptor, suggested she give the anime a Navajo bent. She followed her father’s advice and draws upon Navajo history and culture for her paintings. John has a bachelor’s degree in engineering technology from Southern Utah University. One of the reasons she chose engineering was the lack of running water and electricity in her community.
