Grey Cohoe (1944-1991)

Navajo artist, educator, printmaker, writer, and poet Grey Cohoe (1944-1991) was born on the Navajo Reservation in Tocito, New Mexico. His father, Woodrow Cohoe, was a medicine man. Grey Cohoe was a professor at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Cohoe’s art was described as transitional between the traditional Indian painting style and a new style on the fringe of fine art. His paintings were exhibited at many shows, including exhibitions at the Smithsonian Institution and the Tucson Olympic Pavilion. Cohoe’s work was included in touring exhibitions of the United States Department of State and the United States Information Agency. His art won many awards, including awards from Arizona State University, Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair and Market, and Scottsdale National Indian Arts Exhibition.
