Mitch Battese sketched the piece that became this painting in 2016 when he visited the protest of the Dakota Access Pipeline on the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation. Mitch was a painter, author, and social activist. He attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico and also studied art under Chief Terry Saul.
